FirstService Residential is looking for a Multifamily Energy Efficiency Advisor to support our East Region! This position is based out of our Silver Spring, Maryland office.


In this role, the Energy Advisor will work with multiple stakeholders to assist FirstService Energy and FirstService Residential to continue to provide our value add services to clients. This role will support and report to the Vice President of FirstService Energy by building upon the energy program already established for FirstService Residential buildings in other states/regions. This individual will work directly and indirectly with buildings and property managers to advise on strategies to reduce energy consumption, costs, and greenhouse gas emissions. This individual will drive carbon and cost reduction in the FirstService Residential East Region. A successful candidate should be expected to meet the following criteria and be able to perform the tasks outlined:

  • Passionate about the environment and reducing carbon from buildings.
  • Experienced in energy management and carbon reduction strategies for Multifamily Buildings.
  • Experience with carbon accounting.
  • Thrives on finding solutions and presenting ideas.
  • Able to interpret utility data and calculate energy and carbon savings.
  • Has experience with Multifamily building mechanical systems.
  • Has worked with and/or has knowledge of utility and state incentive programs.
  • Has knowledge of local energy regulations and ordinances in your region and can explain/advise to board members. Including but not limited to: DC and PA Building Energy Performance Standards & Benchmarking
  • Can lead educational events in the region on carbon reduction, technologies, local ordinances, energy purchasing on an annual basis.
  • Can perform building walk-throughs as needed and develop reports as requested.
  • Can verify building typology information as needed for analysis and cataloging purposes.
  • Can develop a high ROI/prescriptive measure incentive program in the market.
  • Can meet with boards to review and present FirstService Energy Report Cards and other audit reports.
  • Work to set up a local vendor market for energy project implementation.
  • Assist with FirstService Residential New Business meetings as requested.
  • Attend board meetings as requested (often at night and in person).
  • Assist with developing energy and building operation training programs.
  • Assist and attend special events.
  • Build relationships with clients and property managers.
  • Drive procurement sales in the market.
  • Service as the in-house energy expert for Ad Hoc requests as needed.
  • Partner with municipalities and NGOs to further network within the region.
  • Assist with special projects as requested.
  • Provide expert local advice on energy-related matters.

Knowledge, skills & proficiencies:

  • Able to work in person out of our Silver Springs, MD office 3-5 days per week. On the other days, the associate will have the option to work remotely.
  • Able to travel to buildings in the region as needed to conduct fieldwork.
  • Undergraduate Degree.
  • 3-5 years' experience working in building operations or energy auditing.
  • Must be familiar with all elements of building mechanical systems (cooling, heating, DHW & distribution).
  • Must be available to attend evening board meetings and special events after 5:00 pm.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of excel and data analysis.
  • EnergyStar Portfolio Manager.
  • Strong working knowledge of building science theory, engineering, multifamily operations, and maintenance.
  • Experience with EnergyCap software and Tableau.
  • The following are preferred qualifications but not required: BPI, LEED O&M, Gpro Certification, CEM.
